Not sure of the answer myself - but does anyone know at what size (population) a city can realistically have a viable metro system?
Is there any historical info to base this on?
Los Angeles has just got one - but arguably it should have had one many years ago.
Paris and London both got theirs when they were about 1 million people?
Is that correct?
How many people do you think can make it work?[/code] |

Glasgow has about 600,000, although 1,000,000 in the metropolitan area.
There are plans to extend our subway in preparation for the 2014 Commonwealth games.
Glasgow is mostly served by Suburban commuter rail though. |

In Italy now a lot of medium city (about 300-500'000 inhabitants) are going to build their own metro sistem. City as Parma and Modena (see wikipedia for more information)
This is quite incredible and expensive expecially in a country that have one of the low percentage of people that use pubblic means of transport. |

| I voted for 200.000 inh. since the Rennes VAL is in quitte a small city and they are considering building a second line. |

This bring the problem of what kind of metro are we talking about? I think that Paris was the first town to use the term of Metro for its rapid transit system. However many people don't know that in Paris metro is short for
"chemin de fer metropolitain" (try to fit that on a sign above the entrances) in other words metropolitan (= urban) railway. The first metros (London, Paris etc. ) had, and still have, pretty much the same size as commuter trains but many town, including Rennes, call metro what is in fact a much smaller type of transit, more properly called either automated light rail or automated guideway transit, with a few vehicles, smaller than those of conventional metros, in a train. Some towns, like Rouen, call metro what is in fact a tram. See photos at www.urbanrail.net |

At 3 million, it requires rail service. It can get one as low as 200 thousand.
But Lausanne is around 100,000 and it has 2 lines. And to clarify, it now has, platform screen doors, on line 2, really.
I don't think it requires a full scale metro system until around 7 million, but at 2 million, it needs light rail with at least 1 underground station.

| I don't have the numbers as to how much of our population lives in large metropolitan areas... I suspect it is well over 50% though. |
