In the last couple of years I came across some very different guided tours of or in metro systems, or information thereof. Some of them are art-related.
Chicago: There's a guided tour by the Chicago Architecture Foundation around the El loop. A train circles the loop several times while a guide explains skyscrapers and other impressive buildings. http://www.architecture.org/tour_view.aspx?TourID=94
Los Angeles: The Metro operator offers tours of the artwork in the Metro Rail system. Tours are led by trained Metro Docent Council volunteers. http://www.metro.net/art
Berlin: The operator offers walking tours on the tracks as well as night tours on a curious topless train. http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/Bvg/Index/folder/603
Any other?

Paris: A private association (ADEMAS) has offered guided night tours on a historic train for about €50 from time to time. But tours are suspended at the moment "due to an incident" in 2007. http://ademas.assoc.free.fr/circuits.htm

Toronto: Joe Clark, journalist, typesetter and presenter of a talk about historic TTC station typography, has hosted two guided tours of station tiling, typography and the messy and inconsistent TTC signage in Toronto's subway stations in 2007. He might possibly host more of these tours.

Moscow: 2-hours privately operated guided tour through all the must-see stations: http://www.firebirdtravel.com/Russia_Travel.php?Tourid=36
("The best time to take a tour of the system is in the evening. The best station are on the Circular Line.") |
